That's a blocked port - it looks like there is nothing wrong with it. I still don't see the issue. Can you feel air being sucked into that port with the motor running?

I don't know, I haven't tried. Is that supposed to be clear?

No, that's my 7 year old cousin.
By the way, my dad asked if there's a float adjustment screw that is accessible without dismantling the carburetor

no external float adj, you have to bend the float arm to change the level

What's it supposed to be like? Clear or sealed?????? And if it's supposed to be sealed, than with what?

It's plugged CHMMX, sort of like a soft plug on your engine block. No air should be able to get past the plug. If the rust we see is all the way through, or if the perimeter isn't sound, it would leak air inward. Brad is asking if, when the engine is running, do you feel air going in at that port? If you do, you'd need to seal it somehow. You could even use a high temp HVAC sealer, it's like putty, or caulking.

ok, thanks. (by the way, that's cardboard in there)
P.S. Would that cause it to not idle?

Cardboard? In the "What is this?" picture? Sure looks like a metal plug. Any way, you've no doubt seen all the posts about poor idling being attributable to loose carb mount bolts. This allows the suction of intake to suck too much air in. The same would be happening if that port is leaking. Try running the car and spray carb cleaner toward the port, if it revs up, it's leaking.

Would it work (temporarily) if i put a piece of tape over it?

Yes, if that clears it up, Bingo! Even run the engine and plug it with a finger. Either way, if it improves, you've found the source. Then you could do a more permanent repair.

I tried that, it'll idle longer than before but it still dies. My dad tried putting his hand over the second barrel for a second and it hovered around 2000 rpm for a while but then started slowing down until it died again. He said one of the gaskets may have dried up because it was sitting for so long. How do I remedy this? By just running it?(and by the way, we only have a few hand tools)

If it won't stay running on idle, what does it do if you pump the throttle? I mean either with the gas pedal, or by hand at the throttle linkage at the carb, run the rpm's up and down. (sounds like your air filter is off, keep your face away from over the carb.)

The rpms go back up, and then it slows down and blahblahblah.rlux4 wrote: what does it do if you pump the throttle?
It stays idling for about a minute or so, before we put the piece of tape over that hole it wouldn't idle at all... I think...
Re: Idler screw?!?!? (look at the bottom!)
By the way, what rpm is it supposed to idle at?
