Love the story. If I recall fiat pump does not blow up on you, and is easy to deal with. Mine has flat hood, and I think I have two spares. No clue when they changed 74?? maybe. All I've got is oldies.
Finger under accel pump, then check fuel pressure as above.

My 71 had its original carb when I bought it. The accelerator pump diaphragm was leaking and it was very obvious, primarily the raw fuel smell but also the little puddle below the pump. I pulled the carb to rebuild it and bought the kit but there are 2 other diaphragms inside the carb that are no longer made and impossible to find and mine were worn through. I have an old thread in which I photographed them to see if anyone here had spares and no luck. i ended up buying a new carb and going with a single plane manifold and the car sounds and feels much nicer.
I kind of liked the mechanical choke though although I guess I dont miss it. Recently I was looking under the dash and when I saw the manual choke lever I was thinking "what the heck is that for?"
