sandpaper?
Re: 78 1.8L Engine Rebuild
I was using a flapper wheel and gave up once I hit the metal mesh. I set the oil filter manifold in a shallow gasoline bath and left it over night. The next day came right off.djape1977 wrote:sandpaper?

Here is a couple more progress pictures.
Cylinder Head Painted
Performance Cams from Mark at Allison's Automotive
I flipped over the head to take a look at the valves and noted some pitting on the #1 cylinder. None of the other cylinders have this. Is this something to be worried about. The automotive shop that did the machining and assembly of the head didnt mention it all. What do you guys think?
Progress on the block
Regarding the timing belt, is it possible to get it on with out removing the crank pulley?

Yes, the timing belt can be installed with the crank pulley in place. On 2 liter engines the timing pointer has to be removed.

dry cams! Make sure you coat the lobes with the assembly paste that came with the cams!

Re: 78 1.8L Engine Rebuild
It seems to be very tight between the pulley, crank sprocket and the front seal housing. I am worried about damaging the belt. At this point it is easy enough tp remove the pulley, but seems like a very akward job for the future.vandor wrote:Yes, the timing belt can be installed with the crank pulley in place. Re: 78 1.8L Engine Rebuild

so he can remove it at some point in future without removing a water outlet
Re: 78 1.8L Engine Rebuild
Yep seems silly to have to drain coolant to change out the timing belt. Not sure if I will ever need too, but what the heck I am going to be ready for it.

You have to undo the Tee to remove the belt As the belt goes around it.

Re: 78 1.8L Engine Rebuild
I have attempted to install the engine. I am really struggling with getting the transmission shaft to engage the clutch and/or pilot bearing. I imagined that with the alignment fairly close the install would be pretty straight forward. Am I missing something? Any tips or tricks that may help? Thanks!
