Yeah, a small metal brake; that's probably it. I was confused by the item behind it, and thought it was part of the contraption.

Very nice shop! BTW, I have a friend in our church who is recently widowed, and her husband was a professional modeling/prototyping engineer, who has a complete shop in the basement. I have been helping her disposition the equipment for sale, but I am "expert" only in woodworking equipment, and the little that he had I have sold off for her. If you or anyone else is interested in this equipment, contact me privately and I will get some details, photos whatever. This shop is unbelievable, many thousands of tools, bits, cutters, etc. There are a lathe, mill, grinders, etc. But no CNC. Older school. It would be a shame to have some scoundrel come in and take it all away for a few thousand, I advised her that it would be better financially to try and sell the individual pieces if possible, so that is what we are doing.

Finally got a chance to get her up on blocks and take a look. From the shop manual, I have 15 nuts/bolts between me and getting this thing free. 13 of them are in plain view. How the heck do you get at the two large upper bell housing bolts? Do you go from the top somehow? I don't have a double jointed 36 inch socket extension either so I may be out of luck?

The right upper BH bolt can be undone from the engine compartment with a 19mm wrench. The left upper one can be removed the same way as the top starter bolt - a couple extensions, a u-joint and a short socket.

I did not find any how to's on this particular tranny rebuild online. Do you admins and gurus think it is worth posting pics of the process, especially coming from an amateur perspective - like a tutorial that others could follow. I'd need your input though. Should it be a separate post? A separate board?
For pics, I don't seem to be able to add image attachments - perhaps I need permission.

You left us hanging...did you get it out? Take pictures? Even started? To post pictures I recommend 640x408 uploaded to photobucket or another website. Once there you can copy whats called an image link and paste it in your reply and the image will magically appear.

SLO.. your ride looks amazing! That is exactly how I picture my baby when she's all done. What are the rims? 17 inch maybe?
Anyway, yes life intervenes as you may know so I have yet to start. Amongst other things, I'm buillding some furniture that proves to be a long haul. I know, my priorities are all messed up!
I do plan on documenting the process once I finally get around to it! Thanks for the tips and encouragement!

Thanks that Spider was sold to a guy in Portland around 2006, haven't seen it since. The rims were 16" and a bit big for me and the car but I got a package deal with a lot of new Fiat parts, cross drilled rotors, wheels, lowering springs, so I put them all on that car. Well while your working with wood you can build a dash.

OK all, I finally got around to adding to this post.
First off, I could not for the life of me, figure out how to access the two bolts on the top of the bell housing holding the tranny to the engine! No amount of socket extensions, elbows, etc allowed me to get a socket on them WHILE having the leverage to torque them free. Finally I said WTH and cut two small slits in the top of the transmission well allowing me to work from within the car - had the bolts out in 5 minutes.
I did not have a transmission lift so had to rig up a pully system that I'm embarrassed to even describe. I got it out though and it was light enough to lug to the bench and work in the open.
Now, I had every intention of working through the whole thing myself but one giant nut on the rear lathe changed that plan. There was nothing I could do to get it loose - tried PB blaster, vibration, impact wrenches, hammers - nothing. Was about to destroy the whole works when I asked a local shop (Shifters Transmissions, Jacksonville) if they could just hit that one nut for me. They said no problem - we'll do a free consult if you bring it in and if it needed a re-build that it would only be a couple hundred bucks. 2 hours after dropping it off here is what they had...
The whole deal was apart and they had a a diagnosis and a parts list! There were a few issues but yes, as a few people mentioned, the synchros where a major culprit. Also a shift fork was pretty bad. While we had it open a few housekeeping items like new bearing were in them mix so got those too.
Needless to say, I felt like they were on top of it and would figure out a way to pay for the convenience. Getting the parts was another story! I ordered everything from about 4 different places because not everyone had everything: Vicks, Bruce's, IAP, and another place I can't remember.
After about a month of shopping and waiting for parts, they had everything back together except the rear seal wouldn't fit. I re-ordered another from IAP, thinking I had screwed up in the mess of my original order but... sure enough the same size seal came again and was wrong again. Stumped, I called IAP and the shop and, by getting inner and outer dimensions of the old seal/opening, we determined that we needed a pre 1981 seal - not the 1981 I though we had! This is especially strange because all the other parts fit. Another week and I was good to go...
Except, filled it with fluid and had leaks all over the place!
Called the shop and they said... "yeah, was worried that might happen - those gaskets from IAP were paper thin crap!" Rather than go back and haggle with IAP, we just did a ghetto gasket of silicone and got back underway. Finally, all ready to install....
But, now I have a leak from the from spindle!
Arrrggghhh! I have a call into the shop but I'm thinking I might just need to get the clutch lever and slide back in place - perhaps this small hole is meant to lubricate the clutch lever assembly!????
Anyway, that's where I am. I thought it might be helpful for somebody. I wish this had turned out to be a comprehensive tranny tutorial because it seems to be needed on the web, but at least its more info on the pile.

Is that bearing in one of those pics rusted and has the balls falling out? jesus!
Edit: nevermind, clearly it's the detent balls and speedometer ball. I should know, I have mine in a ziplock bag in the garage.

That hole that you have the arrow pointing to is a weep hole and lets the oil out went the front trany seal leaks. There are two different size front seals a larger one for 75 and later tranys and a smaller one for the older tarnys. Are you sure that the right seal is in there? To check or change that seal you only need to take the bell housing off add check. Best of luck.

You don't want any gear oil in the bellhousing. It will ruin the clutch. The only lube we put in there on the Porsches I work on is "high pressure" grease on the splined part that the clutch disk slides on.

Thanks SpecialTool. Any idea why this would be leaking?

Re: 1st gear ok, 2nd grinds/pops, 3rd grinds - Fluid? Synrchos?
Likely it is leaking because there is something wrong with the input shaft seal. Or they forgot to put in the large o-ring that seals the seal holder to the bellhousing. Coincidentally a shop called a few days ago asking if it is OK to drive the input shaft seal all the way down. Usually they sit ~8 mm above the 'bottom' of the sealholder.
Also, FWIW, I am not aware of different rear seals - they are all the same. It's the front seals that are different, but the change occurred in ~1976. Out gasket sets have both of them. Oh, and the gaskets are supposed to be paper thin, only the oil pan gasket is thick.
