These engines are designed to rev. Taking it to 6K rpm is nothing for these engines and if you find you are not developing much more power after 4K rpm them there is something wrong with your engine tune.

My current problem is next to no oil pressure at idle. Going to put an accurate oil pressure gauge on it next week or during the Xmas break if I get a chance, but the oil light flickering at idle after the engine has reached running temp is not a good sign.

First thing I will do though is get the sump off and check the pick up and pump, but if that is all good then it can only mean stuff is out of tolerance (read worn bearings, etc). Also just had a camera down the spark plug holes and there is a lot of carbon on the top of the pistons, so may as well get the head off and do the job properly.

131,

Just changed the oil and filter today as I have only had the car for a few weeks and put 20-50 in it hoping that it might have been an oil/filter issue, but no luck. The car is running well enough and is stock standard 76 1800cc model but I am just starting to get the parts together for an upgrade, cams, extractors, distributorless ignition and twin DCOE's but was not sure if I was going to go as far as changing out the pistons for hig comp ones, part of the reason I put the camera into it was to see if they had been changed out for domed ones.

If I am to get the best out of the work I am going to do it I really should increase the compression ratio so I should change the pistons, and while I am at it I may as well change the bearings, see how this always becomes a case of one thing leads to another.

What oil do you use?

Matt.

20w-50. It'll run better with carbs and exhaust done, but depending on the cams, you get the most out of them with a bit more compression. There's not much meat in the heads, so there's no real point in trying to up the compression by shaving it. I've got a 2 litre block in the shed, just under 11:1, which is too much, considering I want to bolt a blower on it, I'll have to use a decompression plate.
