Had a great drive this morning, and it was quite enjoyable! I must say, you guys sure are giving me an education. I appreciate it! Now just gotta make the inside look pretty!

This all raises a good question: Why do we keep the gas filters down under the car where they are a PITA to change and are susceptible to road abuse? I have never read here of anyone refitting a good filter system up in the engine compartment? Anyone done this? Any reason not too?

I have a filter in my trunk to protect the electric fuel pump from junk in the tank. Then another one in the engine bay to protect from from junk in the hard lines.

When I upgraded my carb to an EMPI 32/36 DFEV I installed a generic metal body fuel filter to provide a return line (it has an input, output and a return) then between the output of the generic and my carb I installed a Moeller inline. Both are in the engine bay and I've not had any problems. I have a mechanical fuel pump.

Here is a picture of the Moeller filter that I bought at my local NAPA for about $10.00. Replacement filter cartridges are available and easy to install.

Thats the filter have on mine now too with the mech pump. I had a plastic one on there but it seemed like the heat made it too soft & I think it cracked allowing air into the system.

I just have the one filter up by the carb. Maybe I should put one back in between the pump and the tank?

Thanks for the info on this! I really want to get the filter out from under the car and up where it makes more logistical sense. Are there any considerations you can think of based upon an FI system, as my 1980 is FI/electric pump?

The filter on a fuel injected car doesn't need to be changed very often, keeping it near the fuel pump is the best choice. I wouldn't move it into the engine compartment as it is a high pressure line. VW put theirs in the engine compartment near the fuel distribution system, later systems all put it near the tank.

You can't use a low pressure filter like those shown above on a fuel injected car.

You can put a low pressure filter in front of the the pump between the tank and the pump to protect the pump from big chunks of rust and so on however.

I've got this new knocking sound from the motor. It only happens when the car is good and warmed up. It's not a knock, but a tick. Is this detonation? Could it have something to do with the timing advance?! I'm right at 10BTDC. Any ideas?

does it come and go?
this may be a valve tunrning
the valve mat be bent a little
when running the turn ot spin a bit
a bent one will cause a tick
