Re: Whistling noise
Great replies and thanks. My wife won't even enter the car much less drive it. I made a mistake on the clutch issue. After quizzing my son more he informed me that the engine rpm did not increase and the car stayed at the same speed, indicating clutch slippage. What he said happened was when he depressed the gas pedal the car would not go above 2000 rpm and in fact died. Once he restarted the car it was fine except for the whistling. I agree with you guys I think I have a air leak from somewhere. I will try the carb cleaner trick and see what happens.
Keep the jokes comming.
Thanks

Re: Whistling noise
Guys,
Follow up on whistling noise. I test drove the car yesterday after checking a couple things. The car finally failed on me and not my son. The car lost power as I depressed the gas pedal. The whistling noise became very prominent and in fact sounds like a vacum leak. Another car hobbist happened to be working on his car in his driveway when my broke down. He and I both agreed that it sounded like a vacum leak on the passenger side. I used Mark's idea of taking a hose and putting to my ear and using the other end to nail down the noise. No luck yet. I have recorded the car idling and the noise I will try and find a way to post the recording. The question is where are all the vacum hoses on the car. I would prefer to check everything else before I commit to a bigger job.
Additional question last week my son ran over a curb in a parking garage. I got under the car an inspected and the only damage was to the Cat Conv. dented the passenger side. I know the structure of a CC and could the dent have broken the ceramics inside the CC blocking the exhaust and causing a back pressure to the engine blowing the head gasket?
Thanks

Re: Whistling noise
Your problems are most likely caused by the damaged converter. Loss of power and the whistling is probably due to restrictions. I'd see if you could hear any rattling or something loose inside the cat. You can also feel less exhaust pressure coming from the tailpipe when it's restricted and the cat converter will likely start glowing red form the excessive heat.

Re: Whistling noise
md,
Thanks for the input. There is rattling in the converter. Strange that it took a week for the problems to show up. I am still concerned that there is back pressure and we may have blown the head gasket. there is a definite vacum sucking sound coming from the engine compartment.
Thanks

Re: Whistling noise
My fathers 1990 f-250 5.8liter had its cat plug up on him and it actually ruined his engine (farm truck, winter time, didnt notice the extra engine resistance as anything other than the cold temperatures), the backpressure caused an overheat and destroyed the rings, had to be re-built.
