FiatSpider.com comes through again! If a FI doesn't start

Post by watcher »

Last Saturday I took my Fiat, 81 FI, for it's first night run since I got it. Went to the Fiat America awards banquet. One hour each way. It ran great all the way, no problems. Sunday morning I did a little maintenance, put a new battery in, the old one was over 5 years old, new plugs, changed the differential oil. Jumped in and it would not start. Turned over , checked spark at the coil, plugs. Held the throttle all the way down and it started and died. Gave up looking and started searching this site. Looked at probably over 100 posts and nothing seemed like my problem. Started to make a list of things to check, AFM fuel pressure, cold start injector etc etc......This morning I ran across a post with a link to Bradley Artigue engine maintenance and Modifications. It had the trouble shooting list I was trying to make. Under fuel injection the first thing was a reference to the coolant temperature sensor. To quote him,
"If your fuel injected Spider is running nicely and suddenly stops, inspect the wires leading to this sensor."
When I changed the plugs I must have bent back the connector, it was so brittle it just broke and I did not notice it. iI had no idea that this part was a critical link in the FI system. For $13.00 I got a new sensor and connector, installed it and vroom vroom :D

Second time this site has got me the answer the first time. Thank you to all who make it work!
