Hi all.... Decided to remove my engine and tranny to replace the leaking oil seals, pilot bearing etc. So a wild thought why it was all out was to rebuild my tranny and redo engine oil seals then detail. So I disassembled everything and except for a slightly worn shift fork face it looks like it must have been rebuilt quite recently by the now dead PO. Just in case I had to many brews that day I decided to change the syncros and the shift fork along with the needle bearing and all seals and gaskets. No issue except when I had assembled and ready to pop the bell housing back on.
Question one.........
Checking the IAP vid about the large sprung thrust washer orientation between tranny and bellhousing I noticed that the output shaft moves in and out. Mine does not? Everything inside works fine in selecting gears etc.
Now the thing is, is that the thrust washer compresses the shaft bearing in and keeps it tight against the tranny case anyhow. If it is not fitted then the tranny last a few hundred miles then kaput according to the video guy. So do I have a potential problem here or is it that everything needs working and lube to loosen up?
Question two..... Ordered a tranny mount from IAP and it is 1 inch higher than the old one? The original I took out was not crushed or mis-shapen. Have any of you run into this and will I have a problem with alignment etc? Or..... is the rubber softer to allow it to compress more than the old style thus aligning itself. All the holes are quite correct just the height issue.
I cannot help being suspect that it is another of those after market parts that have been sourced as being close enough. I 'm always getting a lot of new parts which are just not quite correct..... Example the seal in the tranny gasket set was over sized and so fourth.
Also purchased the three part clutch kit. I noticed that the clutch disk is a lot different in design and does not seem of that high a quality compared to the original. It uses ribs instead of being a solid flat friction surface like the original. The pressure plate friction disk is also 1/8 thinner than the original. Anybody used one of these and if so is it worth installing. The original is in great condition and shows very little wear.
Note! I purchased all the new parts prior to tearing down and would not have known if my parts where good until comparing with the new ones. My synchros look identical to the new ones but I replaced them anyhow. Unfortunately I purchased the car from the PO's son who knew nothing about it's history other than been stored for ten years in the garage. Thanks ahead of time for any input.

I had the same question at the time i rebuilt mine. I figure that the motion from the shaft was coming from the synchro springs. So i order new ones to find out that they were not in better shape than the ones installed. So put back in everything and no problems since. And i drive couples thousands miles last summer.

Thanks fellas for your feedback. Good to know about the same issue with no problems. I decided to open it up once again just to check over my work and triple check against all three manuals that I have. Everything seemed fine so back together. It seems to me that once assembled to the bell housing that the input shaft is locked in place by that large thrust washer anyhow? I assume it is in place to dampen any violent motion on the input shaft? Tranny's are not my thing and this is my first rebuild of one. Just wish the manuals would have larger and clearer pics. Added the oil and shift tower and everything turns smoothly and all gears shift with authority...... We will soon see!.

When you fill a "new" transmission with oil, tip the transmission upward for a couple of minutes to send oil to the rear. Place the tranny back on a level surface, wait a little bit, and refill to overflow hole. Easier to fill these buggers when out of the car.
