Clutch crickets?
Clutch crickets?
So the clutch has about 1000 miles on it, and just started making a noise that sounds like crickets. Depressing the clutch pedal makes the noise disappear. I have a sinking feeling... Any ideas?

Re: Clutch crickets?
could it be the thrust bearing? I imagine that it would have been changed as well?

Re: Clutch crickets?
Sounds to me like a noisy transmission input shaft bearing. Mine does the same thing. I figure I'll need to replace the transmission eventually, but for now it's merely annoying. Make sure your tranny is full of the proper lube (mine has Redline in it, put in by our local Fiat mechanic/guru for the PO). Good luck.

Re: Clutch crickets?
What do you have for free pedal play? It should be ~ 3/4" pedal movement before the bearing engage with the clutch.

Re: Clutch crickets?
Clutch noises can be diagnosed by just when they occur. If it is noisy with clutch not enganged, engine running, in nuetral, it is not the pilot bearing. One thing off the list.
Does noise disappear when clutch depressed just enough to have Throw out brg touch pressure plate, or with pedal most of the way down?
Can you hear noise on road while driving in gear??
Input shaft bearing is likely NOT going to make a cricket sound. Would rumble if failing.
Not sure what you mean by a thrust bearing, there is no such piece in there.

Re: Clutch crickets?
Thanks for the suggestions. (Sorry, I meant thowout, not thrust). The noise would go away as soon as the clutch was slightly depressed, and the pedal play seems correct. I started it up cold and...no noise. It seems to emerge after driving at high speed in 5th gear for awhile. Anything else to eliminate?
Re: Clutch crickets?
If noise goes away when pedal slightly depressed, should really get underneath car, with it properly supported and safety glasses on, and run engine and get it to cricket. See if the clutch fork is squeeking as it vibrates. Maybe move fork around and see if yoiu can change noise. Maybe create a bit more slack in cable to make darn sure TO brg is not touching pressure plate.
How noisy is it??
