34 dmsa on single plane 1800

Post by boogiedude »

So I got my hands on a 34dmsa and I'm wondering if there are any mods/extras I need to mount it? I have a 78 1800 with a single plane manifold running the stock adfa.

I know I'll obviously need to block off the water choke and rig up a manual choke cable or remove the butterflies from the 34, but do I need to get a spacer, or modify the accel linkage in anyway?

Thanks!

The 32 ADFs have a taller base so you will need a spacer or use shorter studs. Not sure about the linkage but I think the throttle rod should hook up okay.

boogie, I have a 3/4" spacer, and/or shorter studs, but you probably already knew that.

I'd buy a new length of coolant hose and hook the fitting on the water pipe on the back of the water pump directly to the fitting on the intake manifold to make a "loop" for the coolant.

Should've figured you would have them stored away in your warehouse.

Which fitting on the back of the water pump are you talking about? The only fitting I can picture is the one that runs to the heater

There is a metal tube about 3/4" diameter comming off the back of the water pump. It runs parallel with the head and under the exhaust manifold. It turns up just behind the distributor. There is a small dimeter port with a hose that runs behind the head and connects to one side of the water activated choke housing. The other coolant tube connects to the rear port on the intake manifold just behind the #4 intake runner.

Just remove the hose from the intake manifold to the water choke housing and discard, then remove the longer hose from the auto choke housing and connect it to the port on the intake manifold. Simple.

I have a 34 dmsa on a single plane for the 72. I have a 12mm riser and I believe I changed the studs to shorter ones. As Matt said , I'll be making a loop from the intake manifold to the small port on the heater tube. I don't believe the original heater tube for the 72 had the extra small diameter port, but am using a tube from a later car.

You will need a spacer if you planning to use the original air breather, the breather will hit the valve cover if you don’t.
Not sure about your linkage but I use throttle parts from the original ADFA carb on my 34DMS to make the original gas pedal wire to work on my spider.

It was recomended to me as well to use the cable linkage for the carb if possible. Pedal assembly and the fittings on the cam tower.cover? as well are needed.

Got the carb on without a hitch. Very straight forward. I spent more time trying to get my keys out of the trunk afterward than I did installing and tuning the carb
