What cam to choose

Post by ORFORD2004 »

I want to rebuilt my 2L engine with HC pistons from Vicks. The head will have big valves and spring and some porting. Maybe i will put injectors with more flow if needed. Whitch cam do i choose? The 40-80 80-40 or the 42-82 82-42?

I have a 80 fi. Mark might repeat this but I talked to other gear heads in my area and they all asked what kind of driving are you doing. I wanted some mid-range and I drive between 2800 and 5500 rpm for the most part, a combination of city and highway driving. I ended up with Marks FI cams and the 2-3 days I've had a chance to drive the car with them installed.. I love em. It was also recomended to get the adjusable cam wheels,so I bought some from Millers Mule and had the cams/engine degreed in properly. That I think made the big difference. I still run the original FI system and am so far really happy with the results. The car works well in traffic/stop lights ect. and really spools up and moves well on the highway. Oh yea the head itself had a bunch ($$$) of work as well.(2L fi head)
I had originally set the timming at 10 deg and thought it was a bit lumpy when cold so I called Mark and he recomended another couple of deg should take some of that out. At -5 deg cel, I reset the dist. and is better, should be better yet when we get a bit more heat in the air.
Previously I had the 1800 head and stock cams / wheels and this set up is better... so far anyway.

I just want more power because last summer i pass a trailer and when i downshift to 4 and floor the gaz, the only thing that change, was the sound... I ended flapping my ears to try to get some speed. That's when i decided to rebuilt that engine.

Hi,
I rebuilt my 1980 2.0L FI engine using Vicks HC pistons and 285V camshafts from Allison's automotive. I kept the intake side standard apart from polishing the inlet ports. I used a complete exhaust system from Allison's: manifold, pipes, catalytic converter, resonator and rear muffler.
Summary: :D Great power. I have sold the car and a customer of Mark has it now. They did a dyno pull on the car a few months ago and got 107hp at the wheels, which is about 125 - 130hp at the flywheel.
:( The idle was lumpy. Therefore, If I was doing such a job again I would go for the 274FI camshafts. Also, it was a bit too noisy for me. I replaced the rear magnaflow muffler with an off the shelf Checker O'Reilly part which was better for noise; sufficiently quiet at steady state with a bark when accelerating.
Bigger injectors? No, you won't need them. I had a wide band A/F ratio sensor fitted and it was plenty rich with the stock fuel system even at 6000RPM wide open throttle.
Bigger valves? Maybe but they will only show results at higher RPMs. Stronger valve springs? Again useful at high engine speeds only and it is extra work to compress stronger springs.
Good Luck,
Brian

Some great advice from the folks that have done this. I'm currently doing the same thing with Vicks HC pistons. I'll tell you that my big concern with the 40/80 80/40 cams is a rough running car for street use and drop off in power at high RPM. I'm Using the adjustible cam pulley as well and that will help. In the RPM range below 5500 you should be able to run off the Bosh set up. I'm in over my head with a megasquirt system and have professional help from Vicks.
