repair air intake heater 80 fi

Post by narfire »

Started the car up on Christmas day and the brass heater on the intake was leaking. Swapped it out with another I had and went out today to start it up and It LEAKS as well. Seems the solder has a crack right at the tab that hooks under the hose clamp on the plastic plenum.
What kind of solder does one use? A diy job without expensive tools, or off to a shop? There is a custom forge and silversmith in the area.
Much thank... again

Yours has the early type that attaches with a spring or something, right? I'd say to just remove it if you lived somewhere warm. If it's brass, you could just use silver solder like for a radiator?

Thanks Trey. I do live somewhere warm... March-Oct. then cold. I have contacted a fellow that checks out the rads I have kicking about, and he'll solder the thing up for me. You have a point though, wonder how cold it has to be before the insides ice up. At the moment the RH is about 12-18% and about -2 deg C outside. Perhaps in the spring I could just connect the hoses and skip the heater?
