79 with carb switch to FI Question

Post by lamborghinikid »

How hard is it to install the fuel injection to a carb engine? I have the FI intake and all the parts but I was wanting to go either dual carbs or FI. If I go FI I was wanting to go with bigger injectors and a good after market turbo. I've even kicked around the idea of motorcycle carbs. I also have heard of a manifold that will take a holly. What I'm saying is I don't like the carb that is on the car now and don't want to mortage the garage to get something that offers proformance and looks trick,. Any ideas?

I converted my 79 to FI. It was a fun conversion. You really need a FI Fuel Tank to make it work unless you modify your stock tank. Don't ask me what needs to be done as I used a FI Tank. But I think you need a fuel surge tank.

I had my injectors cleaned at the time and I needed to use one of those "free flow" round chrome air filters as the stock FI air cleaner box would not fit. I also used a FI Exhaust manifold and down pipe.

Looks good I was really wanting to put dual carbs on it but I don't know seems like a lot of cash. The engine I have in the car now is carb. is there a brain box or anything I need to worry about? Does anyone know of a thread on here where someone did the project?

you need the complete fi system including wiring harness and ecm. otherwise it will take a lot of piecing together. If the dual carbs seem like a lot, have you priced a turbo setup?

Not sure where you hang your hat, but perhaps snoop around for a 2L engine for sale. Over the course of a year build an engine you want, perhaps HC pistons, tuned up 1800 head, headers, cams, ect. Yes some $$ are involved but over time it might be easier to swallow. I think you could get good performance from the 2L with a carb set up. Does your FI system include the electric fuel pump, rails, wiring, computer, fuel tank. Bolt on improvements to your 79 engine include headers, the 1800 head, single plane manifold and say a 32/36 carb.
Lots of choices, just $$$ and time dictates.

I have a couple engines I think I have the FI stuff to do this where is the emc located? Is there a brain box? I have a 80 behind the barn that I pulled the FI off of. The 79 had a carb set up that runs like crap at idle ect.. Just wondering if I have eveything I need to do this. I can always switch to dual carbs in the future. The head on the 77 is what I was going to use for the rebuild anyway Thats a project for next winter. :)

You'll find the injector wires, sensor wires, ect tied up in a bundle and then go behind the engine and through the firewall on the passenger side. The other end of the bundle is the BRAINS so to speak. The ecu is a box with a bunch of pins, about 6" X 7" if I remember.
There is a double relay in the "pan" above the passenger footwell as well you'll need to start the electric fuel pump when the afm starts to open up. Power to it??? check your parts car I suppose.. The FI intake of course bolts right onto the 1800 head from your 77 engine.
Some fiddle- farting about to be sure, but doable.

I located my ECU and double relay under the glove box just like the OEM cars. I mounted the fuel pump under the drivers side rear seat. You will need to provide power to the double relay. See pin layout below. Not a hard job just a lot of detail work.

: 88Y - 12 volts Power always on
via an inline fuse.

: 88D - Fuel Pump

: 86C - 12 volts Fuse A

: 86A - Same wire that goes to the Starter
#50 on the ignition switch, goes to solenoid.

: 88Z - 12 volts Power always on

.
The dual relay is the fuel injection's link to the cars electric supply.
The terminals on the relay are numbered for reference.
Terminal 88d should be connected to the fuel pump's positive terminal.
Terminal 88z connects directly to the battery's positive side.
Terminals 86a, 88y, and 88c connect to wires leading to the ignition switch.
86a connects to the ignitions terminal 50 and is hot when the engine is cranking.
88y connects to terminal 30 and is always hot.
86c connects to terminal 15 and is hot when the key is in the drive position.
