The leaky transmission

Post by TulsaSpider »

Hi all I have my 2L motor project well under way. I pulled the old 1800 out and now have a transmission question. This transmission seems to be good. I have had zero problems with it. My question is it seems to have a leak or more than on. Where should I look what seals should be replaced? yes the motor was pretty leaky but I think the trans is as well.
Here's a pic;

For around 23.00 you can get a complete gasket set for it... since it is out, just replace all gaskets and seals.

Same here. First time was with the parts car I got. Since the tranny was toast I decided to take a self course on FIAT transmissions :mrgreen:

Questions is, how deep into the tranny you want to go? The leaks could be from the outside seals/gaskets. Replace those and be done with it. But if you decide to take it apart completely, take notes, photos, even video if you can, while taking it apart.

Here is a repost from my thread: My First Fiat - Parts car

There is nothing more dangerous than an ignorant with initiative... may the FIAT gods forgive me.... :P

Well I have three transmissions, nut this is the only one I know the history of so I will be re-using it. Since the only problem I am aware of is the leakiness, then that's all I want to fix

My tranny was leaking too. I was able to track down the location with a suggestion from Denise to wipe it down and take it for a drive. Turned out to be the plug on the front of the shift tower had popped out. It was hard to get a new one in there with it still in the car. I had to take a hammer with a metal handle and heat it up and bend it so it would sort of wrap around the transmission. The plug that came out is a 20mm freeze plug. It's been 4 and a half years and it's still in there. Check this plug and make sure it's tight and not leaking before you put the tranny back in the car.
