Update on my issue.

I pulled the starter off ...along with several layers of skin off the knuckles  only to find on the bench that the starter & solenoid were fine. Sure enough as Spider 2081 was mentioning I went back to checking battery / wiring / connections and found that the battery was the culprit.

if you own a Fiat, you should invest in a volt/ohmmeter

As an earlier post attests.....it cannot be mentioned too many times that a common preventative maintenance item is the addition of a second ground wire.

It does not solve most starter & solenoid issues, but it does prevent the loss of clutch cables.

I put mine between the block and the inner fender wall, and use a 16" black battery cable. I use the mounting hole left from the exited air pump on the block and drill a 8mm hole near the shock opening on the inner fender.

I haven't been able to post on here for a few days but I wanted to point out when I titled this "Click!!" the click in question was actually just the sound of the key turning.

I got to thinking about it after reading some of the posts that it could be taken as the sound of a weak solenoid, which would certainly lead to thoughts of bad grounds and other connections.

Still important stuff!

When I pulled off some of the federal plumbing from my engine I had to remove a secondary ground someone had connected between the air pump and the fenderwell. I'm going to be replacing that cable as soon as I get one a little bit longer.
