Exhaust Manifold Smoking Antifreeze Aerated

Post by jetride124 »

Hope everyone had a happy holiday!
Okay I replaced the head and got it reasonbly timed or at least close enough to start, but it wouldnt stay running so I rebuilt my carb. Now My idle is crazy high and the the exhaust manifold get so hot the metal itself smokes. Then I look at the antifreeze in the radiator and it looks white with air bubbles. Let it sit for a minute and abra ca dabra antifreeze is perfectly green. What have I done wrong this time?!?!
Did I mess up when doing the head gasket or what? But it Runs for bit for I get to scared and turn it back off. Please any advice would be better than me doing irreparable damage.
Thanks
Jared

the fast idle and hot exhaust would indicate your timing is too far advanced. The foaming antifreeze would suggest that exhaust gases are getting into the cooling system. check your oil for coolant contamination.

Your manifold is going to smoke till it burns off all the muck that has gotten on it. This should take a few minutes of running. So if you have not yet run car for long do not be too concerned about manifold smoking. UNLESS it is glowing red!

Advanced timing will NOT cause manifold to get too hot. Retarded timing will, as fuel is burning in manifold and not in cylinder like it should.

Crazy high idle, something wrong at carb or horrible vacuum leak.

Foam in radiator, how long have you run this thing??

Its only ran for 10 to 15 seconds at a time. Once I saw the smoke coming off the exhaust mainfold I turn it off. Thats when I check the coolant and it was aerated but once it sits for 10 to 15 seconds its back to green.

Make sure it is full of coolant then run it. If you have had it all apart it likely will smoke off manifold and head for quite a while. I would bet you know the right way to bleed cooling system?? The "T" in the heater hose is a good trick, so is just taking your time, run it for a couple minutes, let it cool a few, then top off coolant. Repeat, repeat, repeat.

Thank you very much I will try that when I get off work today and I got a bunch of plugs for the intake and exhaust manifold to securely block the severe vacuum leaks. You guys a flipping awesome I truly appreciate the help the members of this site are willing to give. Your guy's knowledge is invaluable.
