Getting going again....

Post by jaownbey »

Last year my dad gave me his 81 spider he bought the year I was born, for my college graduation. Since then it has been in the shop with transmission issues. We just brought it home today and on the way home it was running rough. After warming up, the engine would sort of sputter and be on and off power when you would try to accelerate.

It has not been regularly driven in almost 10 years, so some things definitely need to be cleaned out. We put some injector cleaner in it, but what else needs to be done?

Any ideas as to the engine problem? Its acting like its not getting a steady flow of gas. When you rev it in neutral it does fine, only when you are in gear and trying to go does it start getting jerky.

Check spark and the electronic ignition. The wires to the pickup get brittle over time. Plugs?
If it has not been driven regularly in 10 years, my guess is the fuel will be the culprit. Perhaps the filter is plugged or partially anyway.
Perhaps the injectors are lacqered up and not working properly.
On the preventative side, I'd want to be changing out the timing belt before long, same with the rubber flex disk on the driveline.
Good luck
