Can anyone tell me if there is any consequence to leaving the back timing gear covers off?

Umm no but don't take it off if you have any oil leaks (which we nearly all do). The belt will sling oil all over the place.

no consequences I can think of. If you do have oil leaks, repair them while you have the covers off. Oil leaks dramatically shorten the life of the belt anyway
