Engine Removal Question

Post by dadandson »

Hi, our 1980 was totaled and we re pulling it apart to build a new spider. The entire front end is cut off and we want to remove the engine. We have a hoist, but where / how do we attach it to the engine? (The exhaust manifold is already removed).

there are several means. I have a couple motors that have small tabs bolted to the block, with holes in 'em that a bolt can be passed through and then through a chain. I don't know if this was Fiat, or others who installed them.
on the motors without those, pick two places diagonally opposed from each other on the motor with bolts into the block or securely into the head and bolt a chain to that place.

or:

usa a large strap and sling it.

On my 81 there was a lifting bracket attached at the top of the front of the engine near/part of the same bracket that holds the top of the dipstick. I don't recall if/where there was a 2nd bracket. When my head was rebuilt the bracket was removed and I didn't want to mess with removing the bolts so I made some slings from nylon webbing when I needed to put the engine back in. I looped one sling around the front and one in the back.

Thanks that does help. There is one tab on the front for engine removal I can use. Any other hints or pictures will help!

Be careful with those lifting tabs. They are not all that strong, and mine are all bent from lifting the engine. Plus, they are held in by bolts that go into the block and are notorious for stripping and leaving you in a world of hurt. My suggestion would be to run straps under the engine and lift it out like a baby in a cradle.

Thanks, we actually purchased nylon straps and cradled the engine with them. Worked great. when I get some time, I will try to post some pictures.
