Valve Cover Gasket Sealer?

Post by Fiat88 »

Last year I replaced my valve cover gaskets because I had a small leak. I used rtv gasket maker to seal the gasket and had no leaks but now I'm worried that I used too much as I've read that too much can stop oil feed to the head. So, I'm gonna order 2 new valve cover gaskets and redo them. So, would you guys recommend using the high tack instead of the RTV to seal the new gaskets? Thx.

I use a gasket adhesive rather than rtv. with cork gaskets, rtv makes a slick surface where the gasket can slide out of place. By using an adhesive only on one side, the gasket stays in place while being tightened and you can still remove the cam cover without destroying the gasket.

If you really feel you need sealer, the high tack would be a better choice.

Are you talking cam cover gaskets or where the cambox bolts on to the head? Cam cover gaskets aren't going to effect oil return, too much sealer on the cambox gaskets can squeeze into oil return holes.

Cam cover gaskets. The covers which have the oil fill cap on.

Your gaskets like everything else in the engine have a job to do, if they are not doing their job something is wrong, I don’t use gasket cement, RTV (unless I use it instead of a gasket) if I need to hold gaskets in place when assembling parts I use spray contact cement on both surfaces, and when the engine is next torn down the gaskets come off easily without the aid of a hammer and chisel.
