fuel pressure ?

I think I'm having fuel pressure problems and need help. My 82 whirls over but no fire. I think it's related to lack of fuel. When I turned the key to the on position the F-pump hums constantly. In the past, it would stop once pressure was right after a few seconds and then start. Do you think I have a lazy f-pump or could it be the fuel pressure regulator? Last summer I got into a parts and checkbook meltdown and replaced too many parts which got me nowhere. I need to proceed without breaking the bank.

the pump didn't stop because pressure was up, they're designed to only run for 2 secs unless the engine starts

Right, that's why I'm puzzled that it keeps running when it should shut off after 2 seconds. Why doesn't it shut down? Since it doesn't it leads me to think something isn't right.

check the AFM to make sure it's closing. there is a switch in the AFM for the fuel pump. When the flap is closed completely the switch is open, cutting current to the pump

When I'm looking at the AFM and I turn the car to start will the needle move on the AFM? When should I see the needle on the AFM move? How does the tach work? I noticed that the tach has died as well.

To recap how it ran just before it died totally it would start fine and run for approximately 3 to 5 miles then stall at a red light. Whirl quite a bit but would eventually start after about 3 long minutes and run roughly and hardly keep running unless I kept pumping the gas to keep it from stalling.

when the engine is cranking the flap should be moving, usually bouncing as the engine cranks

I wonder if it's the control module. You could remove it and take it to a parts store and have it tested. IIRC it's the same as some older GM models.
