Folks, I'm taking an 82 and putting an 1800 head on it, 40/80 cams, 10.1 pistons and other work to have a street performer. The big question at this point is should I spend a few extra dollars and install Duel 40 IDF on PBS intake.
Pros: Very cool old school sound, very nice looking engine to show off work done.
Cons: Price - no significant HP gain from existing fuel injection??? considering cost, reliability may decrease as the car may sit for a month or so between outings. FI has not real maintenance.
What are the thoughts of the forum?

Re: FI to dual carb consideration
you're going to find your engine combo with the stock fi doesn't work very well, so something will have to be done

Mark, appreciate your input. Can you give some details on the limitations of the FI system on this set up. I've read a lot of your posts and it sounds like I am better off with the dual carbs and a little maintenance. Is it that the FI does not work particularly well with the 1800 head?

Re: FI to dual carb consideration
After looking into a lot of background I'm going to go to the MegaSquirt FI system. I'm having some folks at Vicks Autosport install it for me and work out the mapping to try to encorporate the full benefit over the engines spectrum of performance. They have the Dyno time to do it right. Adjustable cam pulleys will be added to the mix to maximize the build. This is going to cost a few dollars more than I wanted to spend. However, I'm pretty confident in both high end and low end preformance with this system installed by a professional.
From the folks I have been talking with it takes a very, very long time to get the mapping right and there are still many hiccups along the way. Time to replace the 85 mph speedo and on the fly tach calculated speed with a 140 mph speedo. Not that I'll go that fast... However, it will be nice to see the car pull on the speedo past 85.

Re: FI to dual carb consideration
I took a 1800 off to put a re-worked 2L head with big valves on my FI. It has Marks cams and adjustable cam wheels and was dialed in properly. It has 84.4 Mahle pistons as well. Balanced and flywheel lightened. Ansa headers.
The two days I had with it before insurance expired was awsome. It was still pulling strong at 145-150 kms/hr before I slowed down and ended up with an excesive speeding ticket(about $3-400+ here). I'm familiar with the stock FI sysem so I'll be keeping that but I love the performance it shows now. The 1800 head was stock except for the bigger valves, I noticed the power difference but it did not have the porting or matching done to it.
I've thought about the mega squirt system as well. I'd love to hear how you have made out. Once mapped out, does the car stay in tune ok or would it need periodic adjustments to keep things dialed in?
Keep us posted and a few pics are nice as well

The above image is where I'm at currently. Engine clean, painted and polished. The engine bay is another story. Some small rust treatment in the front where the radiator leaked, putting a couple coats of high temp black paint on the engine bay.
