The wife and I are planning on driving the Spider to WI for the week of July 4th to explore Door County.

Anyone been there?
Any recommendatoins on best places to stay and things to do?

Thanks,

Dave,

Did you take the ferry across? I am trying to convince my daughter we need to do that this year.

Was it worth the time & cost, or should it be avoided?

Dave,

We are definitely taking the ferry across. We've been on the ferry a few times but this would be the first for the spider.

It is a bit pricey... round trip for two adults and a car is $302.00. Ferry ride is 4 hours and beats driving through Chicago. Leaves twice a day in the summer months.

That is pricey! It only costs $10 for a Suburban and 4 people to go to Ocracoke Island from Beaufort, NC. Of course, that's the only way to get there!

government subsidy and volume play a big part of those cost differences, i will bet.

You may be right. There are two ferries that run between the outer banks and the shore and make several runs a day. The one between Ocracoke and Cape Hatteras is free and a lot shorter trip.

302.00 is the 2006 price which I got by reserving before 04/08.
After that the price is going up.

Mike is probably right about the subsidy; Lake Michigan ferries are non-subsidized private businesses.

There is a high speed ferry that goes to Milwaukee; cuts I believe 1 1/2 hours off the trip across but it is even more expensive and I would have an additional hour drive once I got off in WI.
