NJ emissions question

Hey this question is for you fellow NJ Spider owners. Is there a limit to what you can do to your cars, modification-wise, and still be able to pass emissions for the car inspection? I'm still working on my purchase of a Spider, have zeroed in on a 1978, and I'm pretty sure it has the stock 32 adfa carb with the water choke. Would like to put on the 32/36 DFEV with electric choke but think I read on this forum that it will cause problems with passing emissions.

Assuming emissions testing and standards are different from state to state, do you NJ guys know what mods you can and cannot do to these cars? The car also has an aftermarket exhaust system with headers etc, will this cause a problem for me? It has a catalytic converter, but I'm not sure if the factory exhaust incorporated more emissions equipment that just the cat. The car is in Pennsylvania and I don't think they have emissions testing there so that's why I'm wondering this.

Hey Bug,

As long as you have QQ plates there is no inspection what so ever.

IF you choose to register the car without historic plates than you would have to pass emissions based on the requirements in place as of the year of the car (I think).

QQ plates are the way top go. You only pay a one time registration fee, insurance is really cheap and there is no state inspection. Are you here in the Garden State? If so why haven't you been to one of our breakfasts? You don't have to have a Fiat yet. Lots of intresting and knowledgeable people at our gatherings. George

Thanks guys but I don't think I can get the QQ plates, at least not for a few years. The fiat would be my primary and only car, and it won't be in a covered garage...so I believe that disqualifies me. Gonna have to go the regular route, so gonna have to get an inspection. It's why I need to know if I can put a 32/36 on a '78 spider that comes with a different carb.
