Speedo cable install

I can't find a topic with a clear answer. How do you get the speedometer cable installed? From inside the car or underneath? Please help.

Just did this job last weekend.

On my '69 the speedo cable comes out of the speedo and runs through down through a hole in the middle of the hump, right up by the firewall. I have no console or heater blower in my car right now, so it was real easy to get to that hole from inside the car - it is right under where the heater blower would be.

Down through that hole it runs on the driver's side back to where it screws into a port (for lack of a better word) on the side of the trans. It was pretty simple to unscrew the old cable from the trans and screw in the new one.

What I did was work from inside the car.

First I detached the old cable from the speedo and fed it down through the hold. Then I fed the new cable down through the hole. Then got under the car and unscrewed the old cable, and screwed in the new cable. Then back up into the car and attached the new cable to the speedo.

With the console and heater in place, it might be wise to start by disconnecting the old cable from the speedo. Attach the trans end of the new cable to the speedo end of the old cable, and then go under the car and pull the old cable down through the hole. As you do so, the correct end of the new cable will come down with the old. Then you can proceed as described above.

This was all pretty easy to access with the car up on one jack stand on the driver's side.

Good luck!

On a later model car, the speedo cable goes through the firewall somewhere. Someone else may chime in to help you.

On my '79, the speedo cable comes out just below the brake booster. It's easiest to drop the steering column, pull the dash out some, then route the cable thru from the outside, connect to speedo, replace dash, then route thru tunnel to transmission. It sounds like a long job, but really is only about 30 minutes, if that...
