It's alive! Um was, I need help with carb

Post by spence »

I have the carb installed, made the connections, Mark helped me through a bit, I know he's busy.
Car was hard to start, of course, turned once, then nothing, finally ran, then sputtered out.
First, I think my battery is weak, charging it. Second, I have some vacuum lines no longer needed.
Not sure what is/isn't what. I've uploaded some detail pics.

These are the two ports on the intake L/R (red/orange) orange has 45 deg angle, and a new one on the carb middle top right (blue)

Here's a shot of the whole carb with connections (red) is lower port, (orange) circles hidden connections:

Last, I no longer need to use vac to canister?

I'm not familiar with that carb. What intake are you running? Is it the original dual plane intake or were you able to find a single plane intake? I would think the vacuum nipple at the intake should be blocked if you aren't using it. That will cause you headaches.
As for the charcoal canister, if you are not going to use it, make sure you do not plug the line going into the canister from the firewall. That line goes to a two way valve at your fuel tank and keeps vacuum from building up in your tank. I have mine filtered:

What's the difference between the two? It appears to be the stock intake that came on the 1608.
The carb is an EMPI 32/36
I got it running, new battery, but it sputters, and dies after a bit, like it's flooded.
I also assume I need to plug the big hose that feed the crankcase from the original air filter housing, 2nd pic to the right?
I bought the carb mounted small filter from Mark to replace the housing.
I plugged all the vacuum ports, leaving only the one connected to the brake booster, as Mark directed.
One thing of concern, I noticed antifreeze in the first spark plug port, and some near the front of the engine.

all 3 of those vacuum ports need to be capped if they are not connected to anything. Coolant around the plug almost has to come from the water outlet gasket

Those 3 I have capped, and the old crankcase tube, plug as well?
Is that gasket dangerous? Weird it sat, and now a leak, guess that happens with not running often.

I can get it started, trouble is it won't stay cranked, it's hard to start, smell fuel, checked all the connections, it just dives down, like the key has been turned off. I have fuel in, vac ports plugged, new fuel pump, new battery. What else am I missing?

The crankcase vent hose does not need to be capped. It needs to be able to vent or you're going to have problems with excessive crankcase pressure. If you are not running a filter housing to attach the hose to, you should go to a auto parts store and get a small crankcase breather filter to install.
Does the car die as it's idling or will it also die if you're running the engine at higher rpms? Does it just shut off and the tach goes to zero or does it sputter and die?

If I give it gas, it will go, if I let off, it dies, but then it also died last time I rev'd, and it just died, tach to 0.

Sounds like it may be flooding. Is it a mechanical fuel pump?

Yes, mechanical. Brand new.
New carb has electric choke, tapped the coil, where it has "B+", no kinks, what would cause it to flood? I know my timing is off pretty bad, just ordered cap, rotor, points, plugs and wires, waiting on that before setting timing.

If your car is in need of an ignition tune up, it will be hard to start, run rough, cause the engine to flood and stall out. I would definitely change your points, condensor, cap, rotor, plugs and wires. I find my 1608s like around 10 degrees BTDC on timing.

How do I set cam timing? When I checked with the gun, it was way advanced.

Loosen the nut that hold the distributor down, then slightly turn the distributor one way or the other to change the timing.

Correct me if I'm wrong, there's two place to set timing? The distributor and on the cam itself? I was explaining the timing to Mark, he said it sounded like it needed to be adjusted at the cam?

Then you would most likely want to change the timing belt at the same time.
1978 Spyder 1800 make that 2L! Finally making real progress!
