OK... start the car this morning and hear a loud noise... stopped the engine and removed the spark plugs... rotate the crank and cylinder #1 piston is in the up position and will not move down... all other pistons are moving up and down but not # 1... I believe it threw a rod or the bearing/rod end or bolts broke off... now the big question... is it easy to remove the #1 piston and all other components to that piston without removing the engine out of the car?
If I remove the head, oil pan, etc. will I be able to install a new piston rod and bolt it right back up?
What are we talking here before I send it out to get it worked on or is this something I could do without removing the engine?

you can replace a piston with the motor in the car, but the question will be what condition the crankshaft is in. Usually any event that damages a bearing or rod will damage the crankshaft too.

Realisticly, you need to pull the motor. A broken rod is serious business, and is generally going to damage the crank and possibly the block.

Mark... yes I believe more damage might have been done to the crankshaft as well and I think I may need to overhaul the engine or get a new short block for it... I haven't removed the oil pan yet to inspect it and any damage that might have occured... I'm looking at the pluses and minuses of doing the work myself (complete engine tear down - never done one before and not sure I can handle it, tools, engine lift, etc) or getting the short block and having someone install it for me... I contacted one European mechanic here that does work on Fiats but he wants to do a complete job (valves, head work, etc) and not sure it needs that... just the removal and replacement of the blocks is good for me at this time.
Course of action is up in the air and don't know what direction to go. This is such a bad thing to happen to anyones car at this time for myself or anyone else. Bad karma I guess.

Yes... unfortunately I'm going to have to or have a mechanic do the work... no damage to the block as far as I can see... no oil leaks or anything out of the ordinary... but internally that is another question... going to remove the oil pan now to inspect the crankshaft and what let go on the piston...majicwrench wrote:Realisticly, you need to pull the motor. if i were you i would take the crank to a local machine shop to measure it and see if everything is ok with...might need to be shaved or balanced

Save yourself the labor of pulling the pan with the engine in the car, the engine needs to come out!
And yes, a real mechanic is going to want to do the whole shibang, so he can deliver a nice product. It is also very possible that #1 piston came flying up and hit the valves.
Nobody like messing with something that someone else took apart. Soo....

Would be a learning experience to overhaul engine, but very do-able.
Easiest, quickest route would be to buy a used running engine and swap.
And yes, a real mechanic is going to want to do the whole shibang, so he can deliver a nice product. It is also very possible that #1 piston came flying up and hit the valves.
