Carb problems or fuel pump

Post by redek »

My 75 fiat died while driving yesterday. I got it home a few hours later, and began troubleshooting it today. I replaced the fuel filter and tested the pump. The fuel pump worked fine pumping fuel from the tank and into a gas can at the end of the fuel line. I poured some gas into the top of the carb and the car started up fine. I think it might be a problem with the carb, but I don't know what it might be.

Are you certain it's a fuel problem? Could it be an ignition problem?

Now I'm sure its an electrical problem. I got the pump running, and the fiat started up fine. Will have to troubleshoot relays, and wiring.
Thanks

The fuel pump seems to not have enough power when connected through the wiring harness, but when powered through the battery it runs fine. Is this a failure of the pump or the wiring, does the pump need more power than normal if its broken? I just don't want to spend $60 on a pump that may not fix the problem.
Thanks,
Derek

How many volts do you get when touching the pos post on the fuel pump with a voltmeter? It's possible you have a wire that is broken inside the insulation. I'm not familiar with the electric fuel pump on the Spiders. On my X19, the car has to be cranking before the fuel pump is engaged, so you would have to check voltage while the car is being cranked, not with just the ignition key on. I would also check and clean the ground and make sure all your connections are tight and clean.
