TPS causing high idle?

Post by radionovember »

I recently had a mechanic look at my 82 spider FI to try to fix an idle issue i was having (it would sit really low when cold after i first started it and i would have to manually keep the idle up till it warmed some for it to get to the normal 900 to 1000 rpms).
he made some adjustments and gave it back to me with this crazy fast clicking under the passenger dash. i read here that it was the Throttle Position Sensor out of adjustment and to loosen and turn it clockwise till i got a closed circuit reading from terminals 2 and 18 of the sensor.
well, i did that and now the clicking is gone (great) but now my idle wont go lower than 13 or 14k just sitting. ive adjust the stop screw and the idle speed screw is fully seated. did i mess something up by adjusting the TPS? i'm assuming that has to be the cause.
also, i drove it a bit to check it out and i feel like i smell something inside, maybe a burnt smell or something... although, to be quite honest, i have a tendency to be somewhat hypersensitive to everything happening once i adjust something. maybe that couldnt even be a scenario after adjusting the sensor so i'm willing to concede that i may be making that part up in my head. in any case, thanks for the help guys...

I'm no super mechanic but I find the FI system pretty straightforward as long as I follow Brad's FI tune up and troubleshooting guide. Download it here, and good luck.

thanks j... ill take a look and see if i can figure it out. you may be no super mechanic, but i'm kinda afraid that to whoever is, i might be more of an arch villain. i might have to have someone save this car from me as a mechanic at some point.
this morning it would barely even start. just started to turn over once, then stopped like it had no power, then started turning slowly and with a little gas i kinda got it running at a low idle but its not sounding too good.

Start from the begining before you go nuts adjusting here and there. Have engine at operating temp. when adjusting screws
