engine starts then quits

Post by minimike »

Hi. I recently put a 32 36 weber and 1800 intake on my 2000 engine. I drove it all day the other day, stopping at here and there on short trips to shake it down. I had put a fuel regulator on an electric fuel pump. Pump is doing fine, and I found that I had to open the regulator up all the way as it bogged down in 3rd gear and 4 ,5 once the revs got over 4K.
I'm planning to remove the regulator all together.

Today when I went to drive it, it would start right up, and then die out. Fuel is pumping, obviously spark is there as it starts on the first revolution of the engine.

Any ideas? A faulty electronic something? that quits. Does voltage drop once started? I'm baffeled because it was running fine the other day.

problems with new carbs usually involve dirt getting into them and plugging the idle or low speed circuit, especially since yours ran okay initially

I've got a filter before the carb, but I'll check it out.
BTW, my fuel pump keeps chugging away, I'm assuming pumping fuel. What keeps the carb from flooding with no return
line to the tank?
What fuel pressure is required with the 32-36 weber and the 1800 intake?
I don't want to find that I'm pumping the intake full of fuel.

Webers generally like about 3psi. With the engine idling, look down the primary throat of the carb. If you see fuel trickling out of the discharge nozzle you may have too much pressure

aside from fuel starvation, what might cause the engine to buck at 4 grand in 3rd under accelleration? Seems to run fine at low rpms. and in lower gears at higher rpms.

Mark,
what's the best method to remove the crud from the jets on the weber? Can I remove the fuel supply line, remove the jets, and blow it out with compressed air?

Interesting.
Does it "start right up, then die out" or does it "buck at 4 grand in 3rd under acceration"??

bucking at 4k in 3rd sounds like low fuel pressure

I've solved this issue. I had installed a dial type fuel regulator and a facet fuel pump up front in the engine compartment. When I initially started driving, it was set on 3 and starving in 3rd gear at about 4K revs. I eventually opened it up to 5 during the stop and go test drive at speed. When I got home that nite, I figured that I just open the regulator up all the way. It appeared that I could go to 6, but I went past 0 to 1/2 pound of pressure. Hence the start and quit syndrome. Bad eyes, and working at nite. Car is a runner now and of course wonderful fun.

good news, but I'd suggest relocating the electric pump to the rear as close to the tank as possible

Do you put the pump inside the trunk or under the car? Also do I need a return fuel line to the tank, and what is the ideal psi for the facet with a 32 36?

Hard to believe, but the new in the box fuel regulator was the cause of all my problems. I took it out and could not blow air through it at any setting. Rather than try to see why, I'm gonna toss it and not waste my time.

Thanks for all the help. Mark and others. Mike B. Thanks for your PM's.

My electric fuel pump is located in the trunk, that's where the PO installed it.

John, Can you em me a pic of the location of your fuel pump? Also, I think I'm gonna put a " T " in the fuel supply line and connect the short part of the "T" as a return to the tank and see how that works. I think it may take some strain off the fuel pump and alleviate running the engine too rich. I'll pull some plugs after I run the car around some more before the T install.
