strange noise in oil sump

Post by Henk »

Who can recognize this noise from the oil sump? (1982 Fiat Spider 2000 inj. Turbo)
Please listen to the video on youtube ( one minute):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=URZ56zwaAG8

Since I mounted 2 years ago a new head gasket, a new timing belt and I demounted my oil sump to fix some oil leakage at the connection of the oil return pipe of the turbo, there is a whine sound in the oil sump, only when the engine is cold. When the engine warms up, there is no problem.
Before this repair this noise was not there. When I run the engine for the first time after the repair, it took a long time ( about a half or one minute) before there was oil pressure, and the noise was much louder.
Now, when I let down the oil sump about one inch (I use the maximum space there is) and I run the engine, the noise is louder, and I can hear it comes out of the oil sump. With a higher engine speed, the noise is also louder. When I crank the engine, without spark plugs, I can’t hear the noise.
Is it possible that the oil pump makes this noise, or could it be something else?
When I mounted a new timing belt, I rotated the aux shaft one teeth, because I thought the old belt was not exact positioned. Could this be the problem?
Now, the summer is over here in the Netherlands, I would solve this problem.
Thank you for the help.

I've heard that whine on several FI Spiders, all when cold. I believe it's the oil pump but no one has had me disassemble one to check it out

Thank you. What do you think, should it be dangerous to ride with such an oil pump? I ride now 2000 miles with it and it gets no better or worser. Could a pump get suddenly defective?

I'm wondering if it isn't sucking air somewhere.

My '82 makes the same noise when cold, but not as loud. Ron's does too. I think someone speculated oil pump alignment, but I do not know if it's been confirmed?

FWIW, I had to replace my pump after I hit a curb and trashed it and the pan.... new pump makes the same sound .... supposedly the pump is OEM ... I wondered about the noise too. Did they all make that sound when new????

Perhaps mr. majicwrench has right. He says it could be sucking air.
When I demounted the sump, I prized at the suck pipe to see if it was good tightened. If there was a crack in the pipe, it could get worser.
Mark said, he had heard it on several FI spiders, they have that low oil sumps, en perhaps cracks in the suck pipe.
I shall disassemble the sump in the next weeks.

I don't think it's sucking air, and on the cars I've seen oil pressure isn't affected by the noise either.

I demounted my oil pump and tested it in a container with oil, with a drill on the shaft. There was no noise.
I also tested it with a blocked outlet (the spring loaded valve has to go open). There was also no noise.
I checked the pump as discribed in the factory book, and everything is OK. I only made a shim to get the force of the spring within the specifications
Now, I mounted the pump in the engine and started the engine.
MY OIL PRESS LAMP IS ON !
I waited about 1 minute and it does not go out. Now I have a few questions:
Is it possible that I pushed up the oil pump drive gear while mounting the oil pump?
How can I check if there is oil flow, without damaging the engine?
How can I test the oil pressure sending unit?

Now everything is OK. I demounted the sparkplugs en the pink thread from the bobine. After about 20 seconds there was oil press. The noise is still there!
