I'll be pulling both the motor & trans soon, and I'm wondering if I can drop both the motor & trans out the bottom. I've got a good commercial floor jack that'll lift the car at least two feet off the floor. I got ramps, a few 2 ton floor jacks, blocks, a brother who knows more about cars than I do, and a standard suburban garage to get it done in.
Your thoughts are appreciated!
Can I remove both the motor & trans together?

Any chance of seperating the trans and putting a good hook in the ceiling and pulling from above, then just roll the car back to get the engine on a stand. That would be my druthers, least amount of time on my back the better. The trans can come out with the engine from the top as well. Total weight... I'd guess 400 pounds? Some one here I'm sure would have a more accurate weight.

It's not that difficult to take the pair of them out the top. You need to have the front of the car very high off the ground, remove the gearlever extension from inside the car, as well as the central steering linkage from behind the crossmember, undo all the engine and gearbox mounts, exhaust, radiator, linkages, cables and wiring, then let the box drop down and haul the lot out on a very steep angle.
Not sure of the overall weight. I use a rope sling around the engine and a chain block on a mobile A-frame to lift mine.
If you take it out the bottom, you need to remove the crossmember and suspension, and probably the inlet and exhaust manfolds as well as everything else mentioned above.

Thank you both very much! I know that it may be uncool to still be fascinated by the internet, but I especially like that someone on the opposite side of the earth was able to see my tiny little post & respond to it. BTW, I'm a big fan of Aussie Fiat engineering as seen on turbo124.com & YouTube. It inspired my purchase and rolling restoration of my '72 BC Coupe that's currently underway in the Restorations area. My Spider's motor & trans are going into it.
While I'm at it, should I use the 2 liter cross member in my Coupe when I put the 2 liter motor in it?

I'm using the standard CS1 (1800) crossmember in SPYDUH with a 2-litre engine without problems, not sure what differences there are with a BC (1600) crossmember though.thechadzone wrote:While I'm at it, should I use the 2 liter cross member in my Coupe when I put the 2 liter motor in it?
As for the Aussie Fiat scene - there are still a fair few AC/BC/CC coupes running around (not too many Spiders of course, as they were never built in RHD or sold Down Under) and most are modified in some way. Our Fiat Nationals are coming up in January and that involves a weekend of circuit sprints, a motorkhana and concourse, as well as a hell of a good time .

Our club does stripping regularly, and even though one member has a lift, the preferred method is engine + tranny, out the top. Of course, we have access to an engine hoist, but I've also rented them inexpensively. An inexpensive 17mm wrench bent at an angle is the ticket for removing motor mount nuts
