Doing my timing belt on my 80 Spider 2000.(no a/c) What else should be done at this time for convenience purposes? Bearing/Tensioner? Water pump? Anything else? Any advise is appreciated.
Thanks

Replacing the timing belt...what else should be relaced?
Re: Replacing the timing belt...what else should be relaced?
tensioner bearing and front seals for sure
Re: Replacing the timing belt...what else should be relaced?
I'm of the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" school. There are lots of things under there you COULD fix, but if the seal are not leaking, and the tensioner spins smoooooth and quiet, why change them?? This is such an easy belt job, if something did eventually go wrong under there, that is the time to fix it.
Just my 2 cents.

Re: Replacing the timing belt...what else should be relaced?
I'm of the more preventive frame of mind. Since the front seals leaking will ruin the belt and cause it to fail I like to replace them when the belt is changed. But then I'm also looking at it from the point of view that if I don't replace them and they start leaking a month after I've done the belt the customer is going to ask me why I didn't replace them while I was in there. And besides, the front seals are almost always leaking anyway
Re: Replacing the timing belt...what else should be relaced?
Thank You for the replys. Where exactly are the front seals located and how expensive are they? Thanks
Re: Replacing the timing belt...what else should be relaced?
there are oil seals on both cams, the aux shaft and crankshaft. Any or all of them can/will leak causing oil to ruin the timing belt. Cost is between $5-10 for them
Re: Replacing the timing belt...what else should be relaced?
Mark,
I do timing belt jobs every week for customers, Subaru, Toyota etc etc,--no Fiats--and I almost never change a seal, unless it is leaking. I can not recall the last time I saw a belt that I felt was ruined or had failed due to oil on it.
Obviously, YMMV

Re: Replacing the timing belt...what else should be relaced?
I'm talking strictly about Fiats, although I see loads of Honda cam seals leaking. I'd guesstimate that only 10% of the Fiat engines I put belts on are completely dry up front
Re: Replacing the timing belt...what else should be relaced?
I'll bet it's been 20years since I did a Fiat timing belt for a customer! And I don't see leaking seals near as much as I used to. Those old Subarus were terrible leakers, and a lot of the Hondas, the seals always leaked by the time you got to the second belt. Anyway, I do not change seals unless they are leaking.
