Hey Guys,
I had my engine rebuilt, but I still have a few external oil leaks that I have been trying to put an end to. I took off the oil filter standoff, put on a new gasket and used thread sealant on the bolts and on the two oil pressure switches. Now it looks as though oil is leaking from my separator, dipstick (even though I just replaced the seal), and short hose. I took off my separator and cleaned it. The original short and long hose were cracked so I made new ones. Does the separator have a gasket that goes between it and the block? Also, the plate under the separator, while cleaning the side of my block with a rag and brake cleaner, I found a piece of a thin gasket had broken off. Can I take this plate off and use silicon to seal it? The drivers side of the block is a little wet so it's hard to narrow down where it's coming from, but I do have oil puddling on my oil filter and oil pan lip.
Ordered the new separator hoses etc. Peter, if your around the next little while, can I borrow your expertise?
Thanks,
Adam

There is a gasket between the separator and block. The plate you are referring to, is it the mechanical fuel pump blocking plate? You should be able to buy a mechanical fuel pump gasket to use under that plate.

Perhaps a mechanical fuel pump backing plate, but the plate is just that, a plate with two bolts directly under the separator. Being a 74, some places say that my car runs a mechanical fuel pump, other reference sites say it's an electric pump.

The 74 was the first year for an electric fuel pump. Later on, they went back to the mechanical pump. I don't know why. In the Fiat parts book, it is showing a gasket under that plate and the gasket looks just like the one that goes under the mechanical pump.

Adam - Sorry, I just saw this call for help (if you meant me). I might be able to steer you, although I've never had the problems you've described. I'm pretty tied up this weekend, but if you want to phone Monday afternoon or later I should be available (613-692-2940).
Peter

Re: My 74 wont stop dripping oil
upon closer inspection yesterday afternoon, it turns out that my McGivered short hose let go causing the most recent coating of oil. Should have the replacement towards the end of next week, will also add a gasket to the separator and the fuel pump plate.
Peter, I forgot that its thanksgiving weekend for us. I'll give you a shout next week when the parts arrive.
Thanks,
Adam
