fuel not getting to feul filter

Post by 74SpyderGates »

Hello to all,

I just purchased a 1976 Fiat 124 Spyder. Just finished changing gas filter, plugs, wires, oil etc,,,
The car is cranking nicely, but will not start. I looked at the gas filter and there is no fuel that got to it.
Can someone pls help me.

Regards Gates...

Open the trunk and turn on the ignition. Can you hear the fuel pump running?

Does a 76 have an electric pump or mechanical? You may have a hole in a hose or line, causing air to get in the system and not letting it prime.

There are no fuel leaks anywhere. I believe it has electronic fuel sender. In the trunk I have 2 chrome cylinders that look like a gas filter or electric pump. No noise when I turn the key. Does anyone know if this car has a fuse for the fuel pump. Tks.

Everything electrical goes thru a fuse somewhere. Pull them out in turn, examine, replace if bad, clean ends and contact spots with pencil eraser if good, and reinstall.

Before you get too carrried away, put a tiny amount of gas into carb and see if engine fires up. There is no reason changing fuel filter would cause pump not to run, but if yoiu have been messing with ignition system....

They should have never made clear fuel filters.

I finally had time to take a better look at whats going on. I noticed, when I turned the ignition key right before cranking the engine, there was a click noise that came from the trunk. It seems that the power is going to the fuel pump, but fuel is not being delivered to the fuel filter.
Does anyone know what my next step should be.

Tks in advance.

Gates,
You have to work your way backward. If no fuel coming out of the filter, disconnect fuel line before the filter. Put a can or jar back there to catch the fuel (if it comes out). try cranking it now. If nothing comes out of the discharge end of the fuel pump, switch the two wires on the pump, they may be hooked up backward like the '82 AT I just got. You should hear whirring from and electric fuel pump, if not, remove and test with 12volts from the battery or a 12V charger. If the pump is whirring, try to get some gas through it. If the pump works, go upstream and figure out if your gas tank is full of rust clogging the outlet.

Someone else on here noted that most elec fuel pumps are "pushers" not "pullers". Therefore, it may not be able to suck fuel up into itself if it is an aftermarket setup above the tank (which it sounds like it is). Keep at it persistence DOES pay off.

if the pump is running, check the integrity of the hoses from the tank to the pump. If the hoses are cracked or loose, the pump can't create any suction

Tks Guys,

I will have time tomorrow, to take abetter look at it. I did get under the car to see if I can spot any gas leaks. There is no smell and no sign of any faulty gas line. I was thinking of disconecting, and cleaning the connections in the trunk next to the spare tire.
Does anyone know what they are called. I know that the part that is over the gas tank is feul pump, then there is 2 more stainless steel cylinders. I will take a picture and post it.

I'm not sure if you are sure you even HAVE an electric pump. Pics would be a good start. And did this car run before you started working on it?? If so, pump wired incorrectly etc is NOT you problem.

The car did run before I bought it. It was having a hard time keeping the idel position. If you would keep the gaz pressed and rev it it would be OK, soon after you would let go of the gas it would stall. At that point I thought it would be the feul filter and a good tune-up to solve this problem.
The fuel was going thru at one point. I guess the problem got worse. The previous owner said he changed the feul pump not long ago. I will take pictures of what I have and try to post them tomorrow.

problems at idle are NOT pump or filter problems if the car runs at higher rpms

I had a chance to take pictures this is what I have. I believe its an electric fuel pump. The make is a Carter 7D18A 504 Made in The USA, it also has another piece stuck to it, looks like another fuel filter number on it is 101706K2.
I tested the pump once removed from the trunk by putting direct current on it, the pump makes no noise.
I passed some air into the unit a lot of dirty fuel come out of it. (brownish in color).

I tried to attach pics it's not working, does anyone know how.
