Hello Fiatees.....
Owned a 1974 Spider 20 yrs ago.
Am now looking at a 1984 for sale in my area.
Owner wants $8K. Does that sound reasonable?
The car looks good, but I don't know much about 84's.
Are they turbo? What does that mean? Fuel injected?
Any suggestions?

The 1984 would be only fuel injected (no turbo). Depending on the condition they can run some where from $500 to $25,000 so $8000 could be fair

Wecome, $8000.00 would be fair if it is fairly well sorted and no rust. If the owner does not have maintenance records, you will likely have to replace the timing belt and a few other items to give you a piece of mind when driving. How are the tires, what might you have to replace or freshen up like carpets,cracked consols..

Chris - You would do almost anything for a Guiness!
Welcome to the forum. For $8000 there shouldn't be any rust and it should run perfectly. Maybe it needs some maintenance items and a detailing, but that's above average for a decent runner. If there's a member near you, maybe he/she could look at it with you.

Thanks much for the info. Unfortunately, I found yesterday that the '84 was just sold. However, your responses raise other questions: If '84's are fuel injected/not turbo and (I think) '81 - '83s are turbo, which is preferable? Is the turbo also fuel injected? Is the turbo a big maintenance item? I live in Wilmette, IL - north suburb of Chicago. Thanks for any help.

Turbos were a FIAT-sanctioned, after-market, addition by the US firm Legend Industries. They were highly rated when new, not so much for the numbers which, since the boost was relatively low, only moderate, but for the improved 'feel' of the power.
Most of the Turbos that I have seen are now ex-post-facto turbos. The cost, relative rarity and complexity having led their owners to take off the turbo unit when over time they malfunctioned.
Still, if you find a low-mileage, well maintained, Turbo I'd not hesitate to take it. In the US market it still IMO remains king.
