No fuel pressure

Post by Pembroke36 »

My 73 850 Spider has no fuel pressure. Just replaced the pump and the sender in the tank. Drained the tank in put in fresh fuel. Pump does not pump at all. A mechanical pump will cause suction as long as the engine is turning, right? To eliminate the tank and pickup, I put the line directly into a gas can and it still does not pump. Turn the motor over and the piston moves out of the side of the block. The sender I installed is the same shape in the tank, but only has one outlet and the old one has two.

as I recall on the 850, pressure was adjusted by using gaskets of varying thickness. With the pump off, you should be work it manually and create a small suction on the inlet side

Do I have to prime it somehow? Like you have to on a mower or a boat, it is all new lines, filter, pump and sender.

the pump should pull fuel if all of the hoses on the inlet side are tight. You could try pressurizing the tank to push fuel to the pump, then see if it functions

I resolved this awhile back, but just to answer in case someone searches for the future. I used a small handheld vac pump and pulled the fuel almost instantly up to the fuel filter. Pumped till the filter was full and never had an issue with the pressure again. I removed the line right off the inlet of the carb. So I guess I can't pump fuel in if I run it dry. I hope my gauge is accurate. LOL
