The manul I have is for up to 78 it says put the lobes at 12 o'clock slightly pointing toward each other, but this gives me no marks to go with... because the holes are at the bottom. Is there light at the end of the tunnel well at least I got good compression even if the marks were not in the correct place.... Thanks for the help I'm sure if you guys were here it would take you about 5 minutes to figure this one out.. I am trying to eliminate parts of this puzzle but having a hard time doing so...
The cam pulley is clocked to the camshaft with a dowel pin, not to be confused with the timing mark. The hole for the dowel pin may be hidden by the washer under the bolt that holds the cam pulley to the camshaft, but if you look closely, you may see the dowel pin hole. Anyway, with the bolt removed (which you will have to do to exchange the pulleys), you will certainly see the dowel pin holes. If you hold the pulley so that the dowel pin hole is straight up, then the timing mark hole should be pointed inboard toward the center of the engine. With this information in hand, you can properly identify the pulleys whether they have a flange or not, and whether they have stamped markings or not.
