79 Spider Acceleration Hitching/Carb Replacement

Post by flare »

I have a 1979 Spider 2000, and this weekend I finally got the thing running and took it for a spin around the block. During acceleration the engine started hitching and struggling around 2500-3000 RPMs. At higher RPMs everything was smooth, and it idled pretty good. While I accelerated it was smooth, until the mid range and then it seems to lose power and kick back in until i got up to higher RPMs and smooth acceleration again. Any suggestions on what could cause this?

On a second note, my brother-in-law suggested it might be a carb issue. I know that the 79 year has limited options for carbs with all the emissions junk on there. Does anyone have a suggestion for carb replacement? Do the carbs I see in IAP or Vick's catalog work on my intake manifold? I figure the carb is worth getting right, so I'm open to suggestions.

if it's been sitting a long time, your advance might be stuck or your low speed jet could be plugged. A nice upgrade is the 32/36dfev and it will bolt onto your manifold although an 1800 intake makes a nice upgrade if you don't need emission equipment
