'76 with "rear end wander"

Post by mPedro08 »

Have a '76, all new front end (upper/lowers, tie rods etc) all new springs/shocks, wheels/tires, brakes/lines and on and on.

Under acceleration the car has a slight "push" to one side from the rear end you can feel but it does not change lanes or anything like that. Under deceleration you can feel it go in the opposite direction. When you reach a stable speed you can "feel" it come to the middle. Again, these are subtle movements I can feel because I'm used to a very stiff racing suspension in my other vehicle.

Okay, usual suspects would be long trailing arms would they not? Or has someone had a similar problem and cured it another way? If so please tell me how so I can get this thing planting straight under power.

Thanks in advance!!

you must have some worn bushings on the trailing arms

definitely concur with Mark on this one. I was having that issue on the first version of my v6 powered spider because of all the torque from the engine was ripping up the bushing rubber in the lower links. i fixed that by making adjustable ones out of chromoly teflon lined heim joints and schedule 80 pipe. Btw they were real easy to make.

Problem solved! 8)

Thanks everyone....hey there in Mount Vernon, about 40 minutes north of me here near Everett. Do we organize drives up here? I haven't seen any for the Fiat, plenty for Miata's and such.

Hi mPedro08,

Hey ur in my neck of the woods for sure! I have not been keeping up on that sort of thing for a long time. My spider has been apart for over five years. But I am now putting it together seeing how I finally have a garage again. Let me know if you figure something out. There was a Bellingham group that i was interested in that does autocross and poker runs, but it was just a general sports car group nothing specific to the Fiat. Unfortunately I don't know the name of it.

Cheers!
