Trying to buy parts.

Post by jefftegeder »

Looking for a bit of help. Have cruised Mark's website and have drooled at the parts I will buy post California smog. I tried to create an account and tried to put items in my basket on http:\\www.vickauto.com with no luck. I am trying to buy parts for a rebuild and am curious if anyone has any suggestions. Looking for simple things like freeze plugs, timing belts, bearings, rings, etc. Any suggestions?

International Auto Parts. IAP is pretty good for the parts your asking for.
So were you saying that you can't purchase certain items online if you have a California address?
Like the system wont allow the purchases based on your address?
If thats what your saying, That sucks.

Guess I should have been a bit clearer... Need to get my car to pass smog here in Mendocino County, CA. Then I can (not so legally) add non approved California Air Resource Board parts. If it doesn't have a C.A.R.B. number, it isn't ok here and would cause a fail at smog. In the county I live, it won't be have to pass a smog check until change in ownership. So the only fear would be getting pulled over and someone that was smarter than a lugnut to pop the hood. Stock til it passes ;)

Thanks for the suggestion. By the way, spent many summer nights Northwest of you in the Battle Lake area. Miss the fishing, but don't miss the state bird (a.k.a the Mosquito)

Did you have to mention the Mosquito's. Now I won't be able to sleep again

I lived in Reno for many years. I hated smog. I was very familiar with Cali smog codes.

I love the one and only Jesse Ventura (X Minnesota governor) for getting rid of smog here in MN for good.
We had smog for about 5 years it seemed like to me. Jesse said now that all the crappy cars are off the road
why waste taxpayers money and do this useless nonsense emissions testing. So he got rid of all the stations.
He loved giving us our money back. What a great Governor he was.

I usually download or pull up the catalog then just call them. I've used all the vendors mentioned so far to source various parts either broken or missing from my barn find and they are all great on the phone and fast shippers. They are also very good for advice about parts they sell, in particular Mark was very helpful on the phone helping me bypass my voltage regulator when I installed his Alternator upgrade.

C.Obert is another vendor I've used for hard to find chassis parts...we had a welding party on my car and it lives again thanks to them having inner frame rails available off the shelf.

All the parts I have purchased have fit like a glove so far, part of the reason I went ahead and fixed the car instead of stripping it was parts availability.

Good luck and happy hunting.

Oh, almost forgot to mention the stuff you can get from members here. I've gotten misc interior odds and ends and even a hard top from members....post what you need in the parts wanted section and scan the parts for sale section. You may find a member who has what you need because they bought the stuff then ended up going a different direction or it came with a parts car or......

Again, welcome and good luck, but most of all have fun!!

Thank you.
Part of my problem is that I'm one of those guys that hates the phone :( I also work a short 50+ hour week. So most of my shopping is middle of the night or between customers at work. For the record I did send Vick's an email and got a pretty fast response. I wasn't speaking negatively of them, just wanting to know if there was secret. Thanks all for your help. Starting to rebuild the motor so will be posting pictures as I go...
