Transmission Oil Replace

Post by gjacobs101 »

I feel really stupid about this one, but in my zest to change fluids I drained the 5 speed transmission fluid. That is probably a good thing to replace, but I can't seem to find any references to where the fill port is for the tranny. I have read that GL1 is the right fluid to use. Can someone describe where the fill port is for the tranny, I didn't find data in the Fiat manual I have. Note that no "installation fluids" are to blame for this flub.....

Thanks in advance

I believe the filler plug is on the LH side of the tranny about half way up. You'll see it. Just fill it up until the oil starts coming out of the tranny.

The filler plug is on the passenger side (exhaust side). You'll see 2 plugs. The upper one may have some wires coming from it, and is not the the filler plug (it is a sensor that detects a change in gear selection). The lower plug is your fill plug. The tranny takes about 1.5 quarts.

BTW, did you notice a tiny drain plug on the tail end of the tranny? You should drain the oil out of that plug as well, if you haven't already.

Thanks Guys. I'll look for the drain at the end of the tranny too. Should be able to force feed the fluid in with a squeeze bottle and nipple. Got a bit nervous when I couldn't find the fill port, hopefully its the same 12mm as the tranny fluid and oil pan. It was a chore finding a 12mm hex. Need to stop by Autozone for a thermo switch, I'll pick up some GL1.

Any thoughts on changing the diff fluid? Some threads here mention its the same fluid.

Thanks again

There have been about a zillion and one posts regarding these fluids. Do a search and you'll find all the info you could want. By the way, the only auto parts store that has GL-1 that I could find was NAPA. Good luck.
