Exhaust leak

Post by gjacobs101 »

Hello,
I have a new 77 spider and I'm triaging major issues. I have an exhaust leak around the cat and the exhaust looks like it is sitting very low. I can go to the local auto parts store and get a section of pipe to bypass the cat, I don't have an emission check where I live. My questions are:
- Where should the exhaust hangers be? I'd rather not just wire it up to misc parts of the undercarriage. The only hanger I for sure see is close to the end of the header, near the trans and the rubber one that holds the muffler.
- There is a exhaust can before the main muffler. Its a straight section of pipe where that first can is, can/should this be bypassed as well?
- I don't want to spend lots of $$$ yet on exhaust. Most of it is in fairly good condition, but if I could get a basic system for a couple hundred, that may be the way to go.

Thanks!

I bought a muffler and had pipe installed from header to muffler in rear (no cat or res). The parts and labor were $93 and I can't remember the price of the muffler. You are probably better off having exhaust done professionally. I installed header and removed old exhaust prior to taking to shop just so no questions regarding cat arose.

the 77 had a bracket from the head pipe to the bottom of the bellhousing, two springs on the cat and the two hangers on the muffler

Thanks folks.

I had read elsewhere on the forum, that muffler shops can't legally take out a cat. I will ask around about cost to do header back, may have to splice in test pipe first. If the exhaust can be done for $100, that would be great.
