Exhaust studs

Post by digitech »

Quick question - are the exhaust manifold - to - head studs supposed to be coated with sealant prior to installation? Seems like I saw something about these studs penetrating the water jacket but of course, nothing is mentioned in the manuals.

On the studs that go through to hit water or oil, put thread sealant. I use Loctite thread sealant. On the studs that just go into the manifold, put anti-seize.

Okay, I know there were studs in the head originally but most of mine are gone and I've been using bolts - should I re-install the studs? Now I'm concerned the bolts may be too long and going into the water jacket on the holes that go through. What's the best way to go???

only the two highest exhaust studs go through-and that's into the oil galley. Those studs need to be tight and sealed or you'll get oil running down the stud

Thanks Mark, that clears that up. Better to return to studs for all of the attachment points or does it matter?
