Coolant fountain - hmmm.

Post by cbmeadors »

OK- This is the first of what I expect will be many questions as I try and resuscitate my '77 spider.

I'm trying to diagnose my overheating problem (common- I know I've searched the forums). In trying to be systematic, I installed the "T" in the heater hose (which the PO had bypassed the heater core entirely) and raised the front of the car with the intention of burping the system. Now- with the radiator cap off, and the T open, I turn on the motor (cold) and coolant immediately begins gushing from both the radiator and the T (overflow tank just above min line). I find myself confused- what am i missing? Does this indicate some kind of blockage in the cooling system? Is this normal in a spider?

Any suggestions on troubleshooting would be appreciated.

I'd fill the system with the motor OFF, then cap the tee before starting. Can you post a pic of the tee installation?

The Tee should be at the highest point possible, near the hood latch.

If so installed, and with the cabin heater valve to full Hot (fan not necessary), the car can be level. Add coolant to both the radiator neck and the Tee until no bubbles or other activity. Overflow bottle topped off to Full mark. Cap everything and start 'er up. Leave the heater On for the first hour of driving, and cycle it On at least once a month throughout the year to keep everything fresh.

Thanks guys - I basically flushed out the system as much as possible and put in a new t-stat. I went through all the "burping" procedures, including drilling the hole in the t-stat. Now it seems to be working much better and the temp appears stable (so far). I appreciate the help.
