StucK Valve?

Post by james124 »

I have a 1974 Spider with stock 1756 engine and dual IDF 40's, stock exhaust with Ansa rear end muffler. Lately I've been experiencing the following problems with the number 1 cylinder. The spark plug gets carbonized and wet, the engine idles rough, there is popping in the exhaust and the exhaust manifold gets a bit wet around the bolt near cylinder 1. I took compression reading and cylinder 1 reads 75 while the remainder read 120. Indications are that it is the intake valve, so I poured some injector cleaner fluid down the carb, but it has not helped any. Aside from running rich, the engine previously had no issues. Any thoughts? Thanks, JimmyG

More likely a burnt valve or valve seat. Try testing the compression 'wet' with some oil in that cylinder (test it dry first again so you have a direct comparison) by putting a teaspoon of oil in the cylinder before installing the compression tester.

If it is the problem, it will be time to remove the head for a valve job on all of the cylinders.

Good luck.

You have an engine problem. If lucky, just burnt valve. Pull head and inspect.

I had a problem like that, it wasn't a burnt/cracked valve. The valve guide actually stuck to my valve and was moving with it. 2 of them in fact.
