Scraping Noise After Timing Belt/Water Pumo Change

Post by spederman85 »

I recently replaced the timing belt and after I put everything back together and started it, I had a loud scraping noise. Thinking it was the cover plate I put back, I worked it a bit to try to re-position. No luck. Then, I thought I had a bad tension pulley. I just replaced that and put it back together (AGAIN!!!). No luck. I still have the noise.

I am thinking I should remove the cover plate but am not sure that will do it.

Anyone have any suggestions? Do any of the other pulleys have bearing that can go bad?

If I have no luck, I am thinking the best solution is to buy a powerful sound system so that I can turn it way up to drown out the noise.

Thanks for your help.

The title says water pump change, did you install a new water pump also? The impeller of the pump sits very close to the #1 cylinder water jacket. The pump mounting holes are a bit larger than the mounting bolts and if the pump is mounted in such a way the impeller can scape against the cast iron of the cylinder wall. Loosen the bolts and slide the pump towards the passenger side and retighten the mountng bolts.

Could be the inner metal timing belt covers as mine were also making noise. I didn't want to take them off because my neighbor helped me put the new belt on but he had offered to redo it if I wanted. When I'm do for my next belt change I will remove all them. So, it turned out the lower part of the cover was scraping against the back of the crankshaft pulley, my father pushed in the lower cover using a screw driver and hammer and wallah, no scraping noise. :)

Thanks. I did replace the water pump and will do as suggested. I will also try to work the cover a bit and let you know how I make out.

Thanks again.

Well, you were right. I pushed in the cover plate a bit and corrected the problem.

Thanks,
