81 spider looses power
81 spider looses power
hi i still have the same problem with my car from a while ago. The car starts randomly and when it does start it runs fine for a while then looses power and it will go away and come back. I have replaced the the magnetic pickup, the lead from the distributor to the ignition module, and the ignition module. I have no idea where to start or what to look for im trying to get it running good so i can sell it for college money. Thanks Ethan

Hi Ethan. Where to start? Fuel line/system ok? Last fuel filter replacement? Fuel OK /no water or stale? Stale fuel could have gummed up the injectors a tad, perhaps some could suggest an injector cleaner. Good fuel pressure? Any of the injectors leaking,I'd think you'd smell fuel if that was the case though. If you think the fuel system checks out goto electric/timing.
All the marks line up at TDC?
How about all the hoses? any cracks/leaks? Any air being sucked in between the AFM and intake plenum is not good.
Forgot to mention the rubber seals around the injectors... good shape.no tears?
Remember fuel+spark and compression makes that thing work.
Good luck finding the issues and sorting and the college.

You'll need to do some diagnostic tests to narrow down what may be causing your problem. Do you have manuals? Brad Artigue's Modification and Maintenance manual? Also a couple of diagnostic manuals that are here:
http://www.wcmotors.com/personal/Fiat%2 ... agnostics/
and here: http://www.angelfire.com/wa2/fits/index.html#ljetguide
Do you have a fuel pressure tester? A noid light?
These are tools you'll need if you want to find and fix the problem yourself.
Before you get into troubleshooting the FI system you should make sure your cam and ignition timing are both correct. You should make sure your battery is in good shape.
If you're lucky, you'll find the problem (assuming it's not a combination of more than one problem) quickly. But sometimes it takes a while to find the gremlin(s), so you'll need to hang in there.

Re: 81 spider looses power
so i found out that some times when i turn the key over into the on position the gauges will not jump up into there spot like the gas gauge. so there is no power to everything except the clock so i think its something with the ignition its like something is loose. if i turn the key over and back off a lot every once and a while it wont get power to the gauges and the the blinkers and hazards.could this cause a lack of power while driving?
