camshaft housing bolts

Post by dwcars0 »

I am replaceing my timing belt and the camshaft housing cover gaskets. I would like to retorque the camshaft housing because they are leaking a bit of oil. Could someone tell me the sequence and what the torque should be? Also, did I read here somewhere that most people do not put the "inner timing belt cover" back on?

The cam tower bolts should be torqued to 18 pounds. Start with the middle bolts and work evenly in both directions towards each end, alternating sides as you go.
Some people do remove that cover, but that's at you and your engine's own risk. It will definatly be easier to see that everything is lined up, and to make adjustments. But consider this: The timing belt, and it functioning properly is very important. What do you think would happen if one of the other V belts broke? or of you run over a tree branch and it pops up in the engine bay, or maybe a hose or wire gets caught. Disaster for your engine!

Matt. Thanks for the torque info. As for the inner timming cover - you are right, why take a chance. Its getting painted and going back on!
